The 4th of July is just around the corner!
Ask any of my former students what my favorite subject is and without hesitating they will tell you it is HISTORY! (Hence, Pearls of History!)
I love history! Whether it is in the classroom, on the beach, or in bed when I can’t sleep, you can easily find me reading historical documents, letters, diaries, autobiographies, newspaper articles, you name it!
How well versed are you in the American Revolutionary War or more specifically the Declaration of Independence?
Take my fun quiz!
Let me know how you did recalling your 4th-grade knowledge!
Also, if you have any questions concerning the questions I’d love to help, comment below!
On this 4th of July, let us have Gratitude!!
The 4th of July holds such grave importance to our country today. As we celebrate with fireworks, BBQs, and laughter, let us pause and seek to understand.
The 56 signers came from all walks of life. 24 of the signers were judges and lawyers. 9 were farmers and landowners. 11 were merchants. Of the remaining 12 signers, they were doctors, politicians, and ministers of the faith.
Additionally, the signers vastly varied in age. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer at the age of 70 years old. Edward Rutledge – 26 – was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. Eighteen signers were under the age of 40. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence were in their 20s!!
Most importantly, the 56 signers were not simply signing a beautiful document, they were also signing their death warrants! Consequently, their actions were acts of treason against the King of England. Most of these men lost their wealth and many even lost their lives.
“Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact.” (Rush H. Limbaugh, Jr. 1918-1990. Just to clarify, this is Radio Host Rush Limbaugh’s Father.)
On this 4th of July, let us always be grateful! And let us never forget their sacrifice!
May we today celebrate their courage and dedication to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness!!”
