The following is a section of The New-England Primer in which students were required to know the following questions. I have included some recommended Biblical readings that are associated with the 1st grader’s studies as well. Enjoy and let me know how you do!
1st graders from 1777 used The New-England Primer for reading instruction. However, the little blue textbook also taught Biblical lessons to the young pupils! Whether they were studying in a small classroom or at the kitchen table, American children were daily encouraged to learn about the Word of God!!
If you need a 1st Grader’s help on this quiz….
Quiz Hints from Colonial 1st Graders:
- The Creation of Man and Woman is beautifully depicted in Genesis 2:4-3:24.
- The sad story of the first murder. Genesis 4
- Genesis 4 (Question 2 & 3)
- For question 4, a 1st grader would have carefully read Genesis 5.
- If you are struggling with question 5, a Colonial 1st grader would again direct you to Chapter 5 of Genesis. Read carefully at the genealogy!
- Many people can answer the question of “Who led the Israelites out of Egypt to cross the Red Sea?” –Moses! But not many can answer, “Who led the Israelites into the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River?” Ask an early American 1st Grader, she will kindly point to Deuteronomy 31.
- Wondering who is the strongest man in the Bible read Judges 13-16.
- Early American 1st Graders were also well versed in the New Testament. To answer question 8 read Luke 22.
- Also, read Luke 22 to answer question 9.
- For the ninth question, read Acts 6-7 for the heartbreaking account of the first Christian Martyr.
- For the last question, there is no specific mention of this man’s modern-day title, but it is exemplified through his life’s work. Read Acts 22.
