Summer is in session, and therefore we’ve put a fun twist on a great classic sandwich! My husband is in love with the Reuben sandwich. (He judges restaurants by it!) However, I decided to shake the recipe up after trying a local favorite of Reuben Egg Rolls. If you are in the Pensacola area, get up right now and head to McGuire’s, and order their Reuben Egg Roll appetizer! Alex converted me after trying this tasty twist! Thus, I tried my own version of a Reuben recipe, The Reuben Rolls! Alex loves them, and so will you and your family!
There are various claims for Reuben royalties, but this beloved sandwich calls America home. Some say the delicious sandwich is from the Corn Huskers’ state, Nebraska. Others hold to the opinion the Reuben is from New York, but though we may never know which state this classic originated from, we do know it’s American.
Traditionally, the Reuben sandwich calls for corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russin dressing, served on rye bread. However, today there are countless new substitutions, twists, and turns.
Substitutions for Rueben Recipes
- Thousand Island Dressing instead of Russian Dressing
- Grouper, Montreal-styled smoked meat, freshwater fish, and pastrami are all popular substitutions for the corned beef.
- For a vegetarian option, ingredients such as zucchini, cucumbers, mushrooms are also substitutions for corned beef.
- Coleslaw can be used instead of sauerkraut.
- There is even a kosher version that omits the dairy.
- Americans love fried foods, so naturally one can have the Reuben fried as the Reuben Egg Roll. Sometimes the eggs rolls are referred to as Irish Egg Rolls, which makes sense to serve them at McGuires’ Irish Pub.
This Reuben recipe is just as easy and just as yummy!
