Etiquette Every Child Should Know by Mary E. Clark and Margery Closey Quigley.
Sometimes you find great treasures in the most unlikely places. When window shopping at a Colorado thrift store last summer, Alex and I checked out the books first. There are so many beautiful old novels, cookbooks, and more. One great book was this etiquette book for children which I promptly purchased. Later, scrolling through the pages, my husband and I were rolling in laughter after reading #3!
The following etiquette tips are found in “Etiquette Every Child Should Know” by Mary E. Clark and Margery Closey Quigley from 1926.
- Be Engaging in Conversations ~ “Most dinner parties are horrible bores because the people who attend them won’t exert themselves to talk.”
- Pay attention during conversations. ~ “No one has a right to be stupid.”
- Speak Clearly ~ “Don’t talk “baby-talk” even to babies. Murder is almost justified in the cause of “baby-talkers.” ~ (When I first read this, my jaw dropped!! Then I laughed out loud thinking of all the times I’ve talked “baby-talk” to babies. )
- No whispering in public. ~ “Never make another person near you uncomfortable by lowering your voice when talking to someone else in his vicinity. It marks you as extremely ill-bred. A public place is not designed for private communications.” ~ Do NOT whisper to others in the company of others. This is one of my pet peeves in which I actually find very rude.
- Speak in the proper tone. ~ “To talk in a loud tone, whether indoors or out, at home or in an office, stamps a person as crude.” ~ Such an intense way to say, remember your indoor voice.
- Respect your parents. ~ “The superiority complex prevents many adolescents from listening carefully while their mothers and fathers address them, and from answering intelligently and truthfully questions put to them.”
- Lend a Helping Hand ~ “A boy who allows his mother to lift heavy things, to bring up coal, or to sift ashes, rather than to do these things himself, is a cad.”
