The Marine Corps Ball is one of the most beautiful and honorable events to attend as wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, daughters, and sons. I have had the honor of attending two balls thus far. Both balls were filled with laughter and so many smiles. While attending the ball there are some etiquette rules to be aware of and to remember while attending alongside your handsome Marine!
1. Look Respectable
Similar to your Marine, you are representing the Marine Corps.
The Marines look incredible and your dress should be beautiful and honorable too! The event is considered a black-tie attire. This means no cocktail dresses.

Bring out your best ball gowns and jewels! This is a wonderful time to shine! Honestly, if you have the opportunity, I say go all out! Make-up, hair, shoes, nails, the dress! Have just much fun preparing for the birthday celebration!
Your colors should also be mindful of the season. The Marine Corps Ball is always in November. Fall/winter is a wonderful time to wear rich, deep, and beautiful colors.
As Oscar Wilde once said,
You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”
This is one of my favorite events for people watching. Mainly, I love looking at the handsome couples in the stunning Marine uniform and the dates in lovely dresses!
2. Snack before
Do not arrive on an empty stomach. Be sure to have a snack before arriving and do NOT drink too much before taking your seat for dinner. You do not want to be the poor unfortunate soul rushing to the bathroom with every eye on your quick departure. The ceremonial events can run long, thus be mindful of how much you drink before dinner is served.
3. Respectful in Introductions
Traditionally, the Marine should politely introduce his guest to others. Kindly greet everyone with the proper greeting, “Good evening…”
4. Respectful during the Ceremony
During the ceremonial events, be on your best behavior! Be quiet and attentive. After the ceremony, have fun dancing and laughing. However, the ceremony can be an hour or more, mind your manners, remain in your seat, and silently listen.
5. Put the Phone Away
Especially during the ceremony, be sure to put the cell phone away. Phone etiquette is important in all situations. Do not be taking pictures with others while speeches or ceremonial events are taking place. If you are interested in taking pictures of the ceremony, be sure to double-check if photos are permitted. For some, this is a once in a lifetime experience, be present and enjoy your time without the phone.
6. Holding Hands
Traditionally, in the dress blues, it is not proper etiquette to hold hands. Marines will escort their dates with the presentation of an arm. During the Marine Corps Ball, this rule is typically relaxed.
7. Kissing
Additionally, while in the dress blues, it is not proper etiquette to kiss. This is another form of respect for the valiant uniform of the United States Marine Corps. My husband and I also choose to not kiss in his dress blues until our wedding day.
8. Be polite
Though this is a wonderful celebration with friends and family, you are also in the presence of your Marine’s bosses. Be mindful and respectful. Always remember to say “please” and “thank you.” Also, remember to respectfully address others by their rank or “sir” or “ma’am.”
9. Drink Responsibly
Again, this is a wonderful night to celebrate the birthday of the USMC! Enjoy yourself and the atmosphere. There is typically an open bar, be careful. Be mindful of how much you and your friends drink. Also, be sure you have a safe and sober plan to get home.
10. Enjoy the Marine Corps Ball!
This is a day for a wonderful celebration! Laugh a lot! Smile the whole night! And be sure to dance! ENJOY!
